From HUGH J. SCHONFIELD, International Historian; Deputy-Chairman, World Citizenship Movement; Executive Member Crusade for World Government, etc.
Dear Friend, Although this letter stands in my name, I am writing for others as well as for myself, some of whom have been distinguished for almost lifelong devotion to the cause of world unity. These have ranged themselves beside me as a result of the initiative I took recently in acquainting some who know me with my intention to work for the establishment of a Commonwealth of World Citizens, I briefly described this institution as a pioneer world community, a new people to serve all peoples, composed of individuals of all races who have a world outlook, and which under its own form of government would contribute by practical and evident action and example to the peace and welfare of mankind. Day after day by almost every post replies have come in welcoming and supporting this responsible enterprise, and offering to join in it. The experience has been one I shall never forget, and has confirmed me in my resolve and assured me of many valued colleagues. If what has happened in the limited circle I have so far approached is typical it means a very great influx of associates when the wider circle is reached of like-minded people to whom we now send news of our purpose. The enclosed document offers no more than an outline, and further documents on other aspects, including the period prior to Constitution, will follow. It should however, be sufficient to enable you to say definitely whether we may count on you as one of our number. In a task of this magnitude and unique nature much must be amplified by experience and the sharing of ideas; but since it is no mere paper plan only those can usefully contribute to its more exact and fuller definition who are ready to carry it out. The first stops towards the creation of the Commonwealth of World Citizens will bo taken shortly, and we would ask you therefore to write without delay so that we may have your wholehearted co-operation from the beginning. If you find you can bo no more than a well-wisher we shall still be grateful for your help, financial and otherwise. On request further copies of the document will gladly be supplied, so that you can send them to friends in your own country whom you believe will be interested. We ask, however, that all such names and addresses be sent to us in order to avoid duplication, and in order that efficient records may be maintained. We also ask that no translation of the document be distributed which we have not first seen and approved, and that at this stage no copy or statement be given to the Press.
